Anxiety And Sleep:

In the preliminary studies, we evaluated the extent to which symptoms of stress and depression are associated with subjective sleep complaints and quantitative measures of sleep in individuals with chronic insomnia.

Sleep is an essential part of our daily lives and well-being. A stronger tendency to experience stress-related intrusive thoughts was associated with greater sleep complaints, causing increased anxiety and stress levels for millions of people, often resulting in sleep disruptions that range from trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, to waking early or having nightmares.

Lost sleep robs us of the opportunity to restore ourselves physically, emotionally, and even cognitively. Lost sleep and the resulting daytime sleepiness affect our mood, behavior and performance. Not getting enough sleep impairs our work performance, increases the risk for injuries and makes it more difficult to get along with others.

Effect:

  • Impairs our work performance.
  • Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.
  • Daytime sleepiness.
  • Difficult to concentrate.
  • Memory and reaction time are all affected.
  • More likely to make mistakes or errors.
  • Bad mood and behavior.
  • Risk for injuries and makes it difficult to get along with others.

Remedy:

  • Less intake of caffeine, alcohol, drugs.
  • Deep breathing.
  • Listening music, playing games, dancing etc. help in lowering stress level.

Conclusion:

Observed relationships among symptoms of stress, depression, subjective sleep complaints, may be relevant to the discrepancy between subjective and objective measures of sleep in patients with insomnia and may be more broadly applicable to sleep complaints in association with stressful life events and major depression.
